Goodbye January. Hello February! The second month of the year will see couples being loved up around the city, as well as, families celebrating the Lunar New Year and Family Day. Huff – Firehall Arts Centre

huff is the wrenching, yet darkly comic tale of Wind and his brothers, caught in a torrent of solvent abuse and struggling to cope with the death of their other. With his signature biting humour and raw, vivid imagery, Cardinal expertly portrays over a dozen characters in his captivating solo performance.

Phil Hanley – The Comedy Mixx
Event dates: February 4-6 | Various times
Phil Hanley started standup comedy by performing at open mics around Vancouver, often in between bands at music venues. In these establishments he discovered and honed his unique blending of material and crowd interaction that makes no two of his performances the same. Phil’s style can best bet described as unpredictably reflective, delivered with sharp accuracy and rooted in the grand tradition of joke-telling.

The Soul of the Tango – Orpheum Theatre

The Tango. One of the most passionate and emotional of all dances, with music to match. The VSO and Tango Caliente – extraordinary dancers from Let’s Dance – invite you to a sizzling Symphony Pops program that is muy caliente! You’ll be mesmerized by lush arrangements of some of the best Tango and Latin American music, including Astor Piazzolla, while these incredible dancers light up the stage with their sultry stylings.

The Mozart Experience – Orpheum Theatre

A mischievous street musician is caught playing the orchestra’s grand piano, and instead of scolding her, the conductor instead offers her the chance to “be Mozart” for this program about one of the greatest composers of all time. Through the street musician, her prankster companion, and sublime music, the audience experiences Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s life as a very human story – as well as, a great musical adventure.

Little One – Firehall Arts Centre

Told through the now adult voices of its two main characters, Little One weaves stories of childhood horror and teenage humiliation into a twisted, wryly funny, and ultimately haunting narrative.

Cameron Esposito – The Comedy Mixx
Event dates: February 11-13 | Various times
Cameron got her start in improv comedy at Boston’s ImprovBoston and Improv Asylum, trained at the Second City Conservatory and began her career as a standup in Chicago. Cameron has earned a Chicago Magazine Best of Chicago, toured nationally as a circus ringmaster and created Side Mullet Nation, a solo show that debuted as a part of TBS’ Just for Laughs Chicago and has played across the country, including at New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

Chinese New Year Parade and Cultural Affair – Chinatown

Parade route starts at Chinatown’s Millennium Gate on Pender Street and heads east, turning south onto Gore Street, then west onto Keefer Street. With more than 50 lions, diverse multicultural dance troupes, the Vancouver Police Department Motorcycle Drill Team, marching bands and more, the Chinese New Year Parade is a celebration not to be missed.

Downing’s Phantom of the Opera – Orpheum Theatre

A spectacular multimedia work interweaves a screening of Rupert Julian’s dark and haunting 1925 film, The Phantom of the Opera, with live performance by chorus and chamber ensemble. Toronto-based composer Andrew Downing’s mesmerizing score returns by popular demand, offering new intensity and nuance to the cult-classic tale of gothic romance, lurking horror, and the unequaled power of music.

Ari Shaffir – The Comedy Mix
Event dates: February 18-20 | Various times
Stand-up comedian and actor Ari Shaffir describes his comedy as a puppet show, but without the puppets. He grew up orthodox Jewish, spent 2 years in a yeshiva in Israel, and came back to America to lose his religion and become a comic. Now with 2 hour stand-up specials and his own late night TV series coming up, Ari is a “gifted comic unyielding in his art, becoming a real force to be reckoned with.” (LA Weekly)

Exhilirating Soundscapes – Chan Centre for the Performing Arts

Maestro Tovey conducts a magnificent concert that explores a world of exhilarating soundscapes. French composer Darius Milhaud’s The Creation of the World is rich, exotic music written for a ballet based on African folk mythology. The Third Symphony of American composer Philip Glass is a fascinating piece of sonic architecture for string orchestra, and Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks is a beautiful neo-classical Chamber concerto.

Go Dog Go! – Waterfront Theatre at Granville Island

PD Eastman’s classic children’s book comes to live on stage in an exploration of movement, colour and music. The dogs delve into life with gusto, creating a visual spectacle for the audience to feast upon. They snorkel. They howl at the moon. They ride a ferris wheel. They sing and dance and climb trees. The musical’s bustle and commotion pauses every so often for a moment or two of reflection and then sweeps us again into the whirlwind of these lovable and goofy dogs.

Body Worlds: Animal Inside Out – Science World
Event dates: October 3-March 28
Animal Inside Out features over 100 preserved animal specimens ranging from the common pigeon to an expertly dissected camel. Visitors will be able to check out what’s under the skin of some spectacular animals and determine what makes us the same – and different.

Mashup: The Birth of Modern Culture – Vancouver Art Gallery
