Alessandro Sciarroni – Scotiabank Dance Centre

The boundary-bustin works of Italian choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni range freely between dance, theatre, performance art and anthropology. In FOLK-S, he deconstructs the schuhplttler, a Bavarian folk dance where the performers slap their shoes and legs with their hands, and refines it to its most essential elements, reactivating the movements in a contemporary context.

Raven Spirit Dance’s Salmon Girl explores the world of water and salmon. Through theatre, dance, music and puppetry, this piece for all ages follows the journey of a young girl into this magical world.
The New World Symphony – Orpheum Theatre

One of the brightest lights on the Finnish classical music scene, Juho Pohjonen makes his VSO debut performing Prokofiev’s flat-out exciting Piano Concerto No. 1 with his countryman, conductor Pietari Inkinen. Two different sides of Prokofiev are on display in this concert, as we also hear his throwback to the Classical style of composition. Dvorak’s New World Symphony is one of the best-known and most-loved symphonies ever written, a delicious soundscape of melodies, orchestral colours and musical styles.

Get ready for a Latin dance extravaganza! Las Americas is an exuberant explosion of colour, which takes us on a journey through the dances of South and Central America and up to the US. Vibrant Latin dances such as salsa, tango, cha cha and samba will be performed in addition to captivating traditional folkloric routines that are steeped in culture and history, including Mexican Zapateado, Cumbia, Afro-Latin dances, and more.

Michael Krajewski is one of the most accomplished Pops conductors in the world today, holding posts as Music Director of the Philly Pops, and Principal Pops Conductor in Atlanta, Jacksonville and Houston. he leads a program that features AJ Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle, who have performed their remarkable tribute to legendary folk-rock artists Simon and Garfunkel to sold-out houses for over a decade.

Story of Marguerite de la Rocque de Roberval, a French noblewoman who set out in 1542 for Canada with her uncle, Jacques Cartier to colonize the new-found country. However, she finds herself abandoned on the deserted Isle of Demons as punishment for taking a lover during the voyage.

Vancouver audience favourite Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg and Italy’s Silvia Gribaudi collide and embrace in a new collaboration which navigates the role of comedy as a catalyst to understanding and communications, addressing questions of gender, culture and language along the way. Both these seriously funny women have crafted their own expert blends of physicality and characterization to create hilarious but poignant works, which reflects on the absurdities of life and what it means to be human.

Prazak Quartet – Vancouver Playhouse

The Prazak Quartet has been an audience favourite for 30 years, they provided the core of the concert series celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Friends of Chamber Music in 1998. And now this group, that brings us the best of the burnished string sound of the Bohemian tradition, play a farewell cncert of Mozart, Janaek and Beethoven, music that allows us to revel in tehir special sound and feeling.

The 2017 JFL North West lineup is a ‘who’s who’ of the comedy miz. Names like Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan, Trevor Noah, Chris D’Elia, Iliza, Tom Segura, Game Grumps, Piff the Magic Dragon, My Favourite Murder, Colin Quinn, Brian Poseh, and SiriusXM’s Top Comic Showcase, to name just a few.
The Mars Hotel and Kwan Yin – Firehall Arts Centre

Inspired by PW Bridgman’s eponymously titled flash fiction, The Mars Hotel was commissioned for the 2015 Dancing on the Edge Festival and received rave audience responses. Choreographer Ziyian Kwan and performer Noam Gagnon dance a series of humourous, poignant and delightful vignettes about the word love.
BJM (Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal) – Vancouver Playhouse

BJM returns with a triple bill. Rouge, choregraphed by Rodrigo Pederneiras of Brazilian company Grupo Corpo, is direct, genuine and raw, an ode to resilience and a tribute to indigenous peoples and their musical and cultural legacy. For Kosmos, Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadakis finds inspiration in the world around us and the excitement people experience every day ina city; moments of reunion, gathering and let go. In Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili’s Mono Lisa, two dancers execute incredible acrobatics in a factory-like atmosphere filled with sounds and visions of iron and steel – a breathtaking pas de deux executed with absolute mastery.

Maestro Bramwell Tovey conducts the music of one of the greatest of composers, Johannes Brahms, both the last great Classicist and a Romantic at heart. Hear his powerful Second Place Concerto performed by one of the world’s most commanding pianists, Garrick Ohlsson, a famous Hungarian Dance, and the extraordinary Second Symphony of Brahms.

The quintessential backstage musical comedy classic, 42nd Street is the song and dance fable of Broadway with an American Dream story and includes some of the greatest songs ever written, such as “We’re in the Money”, “Lullaby of Broadway”, “Shuffle Off to Buffalo”, “Dames”, “I Only Have Eyes for You” and of course, “42nd Street”. Based on a novel by Brandford Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s 1933 movie, 42nd Street tells this story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical Pretty Lady. When the leading lady breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star.

Fugitive Voices – Orpheum Annex

This concert features mezzo-soprano marion Newman in two compelling works – Bramwell Tovey’s Fugitive Voices honours the lives of escaped slaves who fled via the Underground Railroad to safety in Canada; Anna Hostmn’s Nuyami Kulhulmx – Singing the Earth – describes the beauty and spirit of British Columbia’s Bella Coola Velley in an immersive, multimedia setting.

The quintessential Seuss, The Cat in the Hat returns to the CTYP stage with extraordinary physical theatre, magic and movement. The Cat and his Hat appears one rainy day and turns The Boy, Sally and the Fish’s world upside down. At first it is fun, but Sally and the Boy soon find themselves in a chaotic predicament. They need to tell that Cat that his mischief is just too much.
