Turn Off the Lights for Earth Hour 2010

Earth Hour begins Saturday March 27 from 8:30 to 9:30 pm

Earth Hour, asks homes and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour to make their stand against climate change and energy conservation.

Last year, more than 4000 cities in 88 countries officially “switched off” to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.

More than 50 million people across 35 countries participated with global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the CN Tower in Toronto, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and the Roman Colosseum – all standing in darkness as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

While Earth Hour is clearly a great cause which achieves measurable results, the main goal of the initiative is to bring awareness to the public.  Tara Wood, Earth Hour manager for the World Wildlife Fund Canada says,

“Turning off the lights for one hour won’t solve climate change.  The message is to make every hour earth hour. It’s truly about awareness. People can be part of the solution.  Each of us can play a role in the fight against climate change and even simple actions like turning off your lights add up to make a really big difference. “

According to the WWF, organizers in more than 92 countries across the globe are participating in this year’s event. So this Saturday, be sure to make it a candlelight dinner and turn off the lights!
